Healthy Curls

Product Application

  1. First of all, I bring my styling products in the shower with me.
  2. If I’m going to shampoo that day, I do it the same way I’ve always done. No difference there.
  3. Sometimes I comb my conditioner through. This is the only time a comb ever touches my hair. Other times I'll finger comb my conditioner through in the shower the way it’s described in Curly Girl. I start at the nape of my neck and do the back of my head that way, then do both sides. I add more conditioner as needed to get rid of all the tangles. I find I get better curls when I finger comb only.
  4. When I'm ready to rinse my conditioner out, I flip my head over and make sure I'm able to still run my fingers through my hair easily, so I detangle a little more upside-down.
  5. I position the shower nozzle so it's pointing straight down. Then I rinse out quickly with my head upside-down, and run my fingers through my hair a little bit while I'm rinsing just to make sure I'm not tangling up again. I leave most of my conditioner in, so I'm really only rinsing for a minute. This is the last step of my shower, so I just turn the water off when I'm done rinsing.
  6. I apply product while I’m still in the shower. I squeeze out a tiny bit of excess water first, but only a bit. For the most part, I'm applying product to DRIPPING wet hair. With my head still flipped upside-down, I scrunch product in underneath first, then I lean my head to both sides to get the sides and the top layers. I prefer to scrunch product in as it helps enourage my curl and helps my curls clump together the way I like them.
  7. I either scrunch with a microfiber towel or plop into a microfiber towel. If I plop, I don’t leave it on for longer than 5 minutes.
  8. Right after I remove the towel, I put a little more product in my hands and I lightly run my hands over my canopy, so lightly that I'm almost not touching my hair. I find this helps eliminate halo frizz after I'm dry.
  9. I air dry while I apply my makeup (approximately 10-15 minutes)
  10. I dry with my bonnet dryer attachment for anywhere from 10-45 minutes, depending on how much I've overslept that morning (I play on the computer while I’m drying).
  11. I air dry the rest of the way.
  12. After my hair dries, I scrunch to get rid of the wet gelled look.
